What is the FSC?

Where possible, at Online Bark we try to make sure our products are purchased from suppliers that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, the FSC. This is an organisation supported by many charities, such as the WWF, that ensures forests are managed in a sustainable way.

The FSC has ten principles that all its forests must meet, but the essential criteria are that the management is ‘environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable’. This FSC operates worldwide, from the Amazon to our own forests in the UK. This ensures that the world’s forests are dealt with in a sustainable way, taking wildlife, the environment and people into consideration.

Whilst timber and bark are obvious products to hold the FSC certification, it can cover anything produced by the forests, including medicines. There are currently over 184 million hectares in the world that comply with the FSC’s standards. In the UK alone there are more than 1.5 million hectares of forest that is certified. However, there is still a long way to go as this is only half of the country’s forests. By promoting and using FSC products, this will hopefully increase.
